The Cool Kids

After reading my blog for a bit did you ever catch the draft that 'the French are...' I know it's terrible comparing cultures and the like but I know one thing I've never said about 'the french' is how cool and laid back they are in fact just the opposite usually.  Well today I've got news for you.  Do you wanna know where the cool kids are at?  The south west corner of France baby.  

So the coolest kids on the block are those from le Gers seriously check it out its beautiful, but I recently took a trip to another little region and hope to return to an area that isn't quite French and isn't quite Spanish in fact it's quite...Basque.  This region divided between Spain and France speaking their own language (not related to any language in Europe) and being all cool and the like.  You like good food?  San Sebastián has more michelin stared restaurants than anywhere else in the world, or maybe you like something cheap healthy and yummy well the basque have been doing tapas before Barcelona thought it was cool.

I just really feel like some spicy food but I'm in France what do I do?  Go to espelette, they dry hot peppers on their houses.  Wanna get some fresh air?  Well just go on a hike in the mountains and visit some wild horses and take a train that's been running since 1900.  Mountains not your thing well how about surfing?  Yep that's right surfing, Biarittz is well known as the surfing capital of Europe with beautiful beaches as well.  

Surfing, eating, outdoors going, beach bumming, spicy, singing, proud but laid back people in this corner of France.  There's a lot of history and food and culture to discover here and this is my saying you might wanna check it out.  You ain't in Lille no more, not that there is anything wrong with Lille (❤️Lille) but I'm telling you the southwest has it all in France just like Belmondo says in 'Breathless' "si vous n'aimez pas les villes... Si vous n'aimez pas la mer...si vous n'aimez pas les mountagnes...va vous faire foutre" pardon his french...

What to do in the event your wallet is stolen

If Paris was a person I would go up to her (she is that catty girl from high school didn't you know) and say 'you must have some serious personal problems' and walk away.  Paris has never liked me.  This trip Paris liked me even less.  My latched bag was no problem for the sneaky pickpocket that snagged my wallet.  Lesson learned,never keep your passport and cash in the same area and don't carry it on you when traveling lock it in your bag in the hotel (or hostel).  Flashback to Chicago as I am somewhat mawkishly ogling my passport looking back on my 3 last visas and international stamps thinking to myself how I want to fill this passport up in the 5 years it was valid.  Flashforward reaching into the vide of my purse in order to pay for metro tickets only to touch the soft leather bottom.  What passes through your mind?  First sheer panic, then you convince yourself that you haven't looked well enough.  You return to your hotel you search everything the obvious and

La CAF- or complaining enough to get some money from the government

Oh France.  You're so beautiful but so complicated.  You're so up tight but you love you some fries.  You can be so polite but you choose to be rude.  France, Fraaaannnce why do you act like you do?  This is an ode to one small portion of the French buraucratic system known as ' la CAF ' or 'Caisse allocation familial' that is sooooo French.   What is CAF?   CAF is a housing stipend that is available to many people especially poor people (me) or people with kids.  You can even get the stipend even if you are not french, yes! How do you get CAF?  You send in every piece of information about yourself and your logeing.  In the end you would rather just send in a blood sample, all your ID cards and your life story if it would go faster. How long does it take?   For ev er for ev er for ev er.  I sent in my documents in October and I am just now getting my stipend the end of April. So why the hassle for CAF?  Basically it pays in some cases over half of yo
